no art in the artist for me

hi and hello

saw my 6th best oscar nominated movie today, had the chance to see the artist as it was $6 tuesday. went in with high expectations, don’t know anyone who has seen it but some of the reviews made it seem like one to see. the trouble for me was if i want to read a movie i would rather read a real silent movie or a foreign film. had seen the trap [1922] with lon chaney last night and the artist was no where as enjoyable. there was an obvious story to tell about the times when talkies began and things changed.  george the main character was not able to go along. pepper the rising star was and proves she could make it while george having nothing to add to a sound movie doesn’t. over the span of a few years she makes it big and he lives with his memoies of being a silent star.  the artist  was different and brings some fun to the screen, but if i want to see a movie i prefer hearing it and if i want to read a movie i prefer the real thing. the dog was important in the movie, he [i think] was played by uggie and had more screen time then most of the supporting cast. the artist is something different, it was not a great movie for me but it did end better then i expected. all of the other 5 oscar movies were better for me then the artist was. guess i just expected something special and all i got was something that tried extra hard to be to cute and failed. yup. signed: meken47.

read a comic about ash and ash

hi and hello

saturday was buy comic book day, still working to get comics every week and since dc rebooted everything there are at least 4 or 5 every week and  we often get behind. picked up batman and detective, supergirl and superboy too, got animal man resurrection man and swamp thing. now just have to find some time to read them all. a new comic came out this week, it was army of darkness #1 and it had a new cuter ash [yes cuter then one that resembles bruce campbell] for it was about ashley k williams who gets her chance to kick deadite butt too. now the world did not need another army of darkness comic but any fan will certainly not care and buy it [yes i did]. the story goes nowhere but then its about ashley and deadites and getting to say klatu barato nikto and kicking someone along the way. the purpose of army of darkness #1 is to lead on to more issues where ash and ash will try and keep evil in check. not sure yet if it works for me though. of course the publisher dynamite has high hopes as they use the tag line: new adventures! new menaces! new weapons! it’s better then the blue light special at your local s mart baby! not much else to say. yup. signed: meken47.

and this week i saw

hi and hello

kept a good enough pace this week, another week of seeing a good mixed selection. saw a western, one with a flying serpent, a sherlock holmes movie and a musical with tyrone power, even saw a movie about invaders from mars. this week had some fairly good movies. my views for the week were: the flying serpent / second fiddle / a study in scarlet / the day mars invaded earth / the kansan / the next three days / i killed that man / the cruel sea [and] harry brown. flying was about q aka quetzalcoati who kills to protect an aztec treasure [hmm]. fiddle had tyrone power falling for sonja henie in between her ice skating routines. study was a sherlock holmes story as he finds a killer. mars has energy martians come and become people [hmm again]. kansan was a good old fashioned western with a big saloon fight scene. killed had a d.a. and reporter figure out who killed a guy just before his execution [another hmm]. cruel was a very well done story of the war at sea from the crew of convoy protectors. harry had michael caine as a vigilante killing some very bad [and deserving] hoodlums. harry brown the last movie i saw turned out to be the best for the week, like death wish the police dont mind him being a vigilante. serpent was the worst as the special effects [hah] were a serpent thing on a wire landing on people who carried his feather. yup. less days in february, wonder if i can see more then the 36 i had last month. will theater something new for sure to help. signed: meken47.

hi and hello

we had the chance to watch ramone eo while the q’s did some movie viewing. he has become an easy to take care of kid and has a smile that is so special. don’t think anyone can ever get enough ramone eo time. our adventure was an easy one as first we just walk him and talk to him, he seems to like going along for a ride. next it was bath time and he shared more smiles before after and during the wash up. then its time to eat and as often happens after he doses off and sleeps some looking even cuter. heck thats what ramone eo does the best he looks cute. looking forward to more ramone eo visits. signed: meken47.

another week more movies

hi and hello

for the first full week in february i was able to see 9 movies, after seeing the descendants i sort of felt movie-ed out but did manage to see 5 more after it. one was another randolph
scott western and also an original dragnet movie too. it was a nice variety week with different sorts of movies. this weeks movies were: holy matrimony / the town that dreaded sundown / the stranger with a gun / the descendants / dragnet / -30- / laramie / the tomorrow machine / and intent to kill. holy was from 1943 about a painter who pretends to be dead to enjoy the quiet life he wants but has troubles. town tells about a serial killer in texas, dawn wells of gilligan’s island [mary ann] gets to scream pretty good. gun has randolph scott playing a bad sort who wants to be a good sort and saves the stage line. it was filmed in 3d and a few chairs get thrown right toward the screen a few times. the descendants tells about matt king and his family adventures as his wife is dying [see blog dated feb 8th]. dragnet is a movie version of the dragnet tv show with sgt friday almost getting his man [the guy dies of cancer first]. -30- was another jack webb movie about getting a newspaper ready so people will have something to read about in the morning. laramie was a durango kid movie [like kid from broken gun] that was realy bad with everyone inept. tomorrow was just plain odd as the police and a reporter look for a missing girl, they discover a nazi scientist with a time machine has her. intent was a well done lets assassinate a south american president movie taking place in a hospital. for the week intent was the best, the doctor is able to stop killers from getting to herbert lom [pink panther guy] after surgery. laramie was the worst, one of those quickie westerns made in the late 40s and early 50s, they dressed characters to match characters from stagecoach made 10 years before to use the same footage. its the worst movie ive seen so far this year. missed a red cross viewing, almost saw charlie wilsons war but had vein failure and didnt. saw tomorrow via imdb video, there are so many available, movies that like tomorrow might not be seen any other way. yup. signed: meken47.

me the fanatic

hi and hello

the dictionary will define a fanatic as: a person with extreme and uncritical enthusiasm or zeal. well when it comes to horlick’s thats me. over 20 years ago while visiting a craft store i found a horlick’s jar. wow an old jar with my name on it, now that does not happen often. horlick’s was a big company in racine wisconsin in the 30′s and produced malted milk powder. different sized jars were used and now are just collector’s items. for a few years i made a practice of getting them and other horlick stuff via ebay. i would fill them with pennies [yea] and display them on the mantle. i could never have to much

cents nor to many horlick things.  there were great coffee mugs, plenty of ads too, dozen different sized jars and being a fanatic i got plenty, even some from england that were not easily available here. it was fun to fill up the jars with pennies and show them off. i am sure visitors will have jar memories at the houses too. i have shared jars with people along the way. i found one coffee mug and then another and more after that accumulating to many probabley, plan to use them on a special occasion, perhaps a wedding. i’ve slowed getting more horlick items, but will never give up. its the fanatic way i guess. yups. signed: meken47.
